When bonding becomes a science: Adhesive cementation of restorations is a critical step in dental treatment. Yet the foundation of this process — surface preparation — is often performed by feel rather than by science. If done incorrectly, the bonding strength can be compromised: the restoration may detach from the tooth, requiring re-cementation, which is inefficient for both dentist and patient. Uncontrolled parameters can also lead to loss of retention and, in the worst case, unnecessary remakes.
