FAQ – The Most Important Questions and Answers About Consumables
Proper polishing reduces surface roughness, leading to less plaque accumulation, improved aesthetics, and reduced wear on opposing teeth.
Because all-ceramic materials are very hard, a rough surface can cause significant wear on antagonists. A smooth surface protects them and extends the lifespan of the restoration.
Polishing is a mechanical process that smooths the surface. Glazing is a thermally induced process in which a thin layer is fused onto the surface. Polished surfaces are often more durable and less prone to chipping.
It can lead to increased wear of opposing teeth, faster plaque buildup, aesthetic deficiencies, and even fractures in the restoration.
Diamond polishers, silicone polishers, polishing pastes, felt wheels, brushes, and specialized polishing systems tailored to the specific material.
Effective divesting starts with marking the ring for targeted processing. First, carry out a preliminary reduction using a separating disc (e.g., Dynex by Renfert) to remove excess material. Next, use a sandblasting agent based on aluminum oxide (e.g., Cobra Aluminum oxide):
- Coarse sandblasting at 2–3 bar to remove large areas of investment material.
- Then, fine sandblasting with aluminum oxide at reduced pressure (~1.5 bar) to avoid damaging the surface of the pressed ceramic.
This stepwise approach protects the restoration, saves time, and ensures a clean surface that is optimally prepared for further processing.
