Sustainability and Animal Welfare in Focus: Bionic Hair Sets a New Standard in Brush Technology

For several months now, our new evo brushes with Bionic Hair have been winning over many dental technicians around the world. What is behind the revolutionary brush hair, why did we at Renfert embark on this development journey, and and how is Bionic Hair redefining standards?

We spoke with Cim Özyurt, Product Manager at Renfert, to find out.

For more than four decades, Renfert has been developing high-quality dental brushes for ceramic layering. The introduction of Bionic Hair marks another milestone born from our ongoing pursuit of improved materials and technologies.

This newly engineered fiber material is the result of intensive research and development, grounded in our long-standing expertise in brush manufacturing.

“High-quality natural hair brushes have ideal properties for dental applications. Their combination of fineness, resilience, and moisture management—thanks to their scaly surface—makes them superior to previous synthetic alternatives. However, the quality of natural hair has become increasingly inconsistent, and the availability of raw materials is declining.”

Bionic Hair combines the best of natural and synthetic hair brushes

At the same time, it overcomes many of the drawbacks of both. The material has exceptional elasticity and remarkable durability, resisting fraying and kinking – even after intensive use. These properties make Bionic Hair ideal for precise and demanding dental applications, such as ceramic layering.

“A core objective in developing Bionic Hair was resource conservation and animal protection” explains Cim Özyurt. Renfert has created a material that not only impresses with its performance, but also reflects responsibility for the environment and animal welfare. Bionic Hair eliminates the risk of import bans and quality inconsistencies associated with natural hair, supporting a more reliable and ethical production process.

Three of our brush models are currently available with Bionic Hair: our “evo” edition from  lay:art evo, Genius evo and Kolinsky evo.

“With Bionic Hair, we are offering more than just an alternative – Bionic Hair is becoming the solution.”

In addition to the evo models equipped with Bionic Hair, Renfert also offers a comprehensive brush range that includes high-quality natural hair brushes — still highly valued by technicians who prefer traditional materials.

The range also includes a variety of mixing trays, specially designed to meet the needs of ceramic work. This means dental technicians can find the perfect tool for every technique and preference — from a single trusted source and in proven Renfert quality.

Key Advantages of Bionic Hair

In an in-depth interview (published in dental dialogue, issue 05/2024), Cim Özyurt, Product Manager at Renfert, provides insights into the challenges and successes associated with the development of Bionic Hair. He emphasizes the importance of effective moisture management and tip tension that is a hallmark of Bionic Hair. These factors are critical to ensuring the performance and precision that dental technicians expect from their tools.

“By combining differently treated fiber filaments, Bionic Hair absorbs moisture in a way that closely mimics natural hair. This allows to replicate the characteristic flame-shaped brush tip. Additionally, we also have developed a method for selectively positioning fine hairs at the brush tip,  increasing hair density in this area. The result is a stronger tip with high flexibility – even under heavy use.”

Layering with Bionic Hair has significant advantages. Bionic Hair brushes adapt to the ceramicist’s individual techniques and hand movements, leading to better handling and improved results. The molecular structure of Bionic Hair allows for a consistent level of quality and performance that cannot be achieved with conventional materials.

“Moisture control is always a key element in brush performance. In addition, precision is everything when layering ceramics. The brush must maintain strong tip tension to apply small and large amounts of ceramic material in a controlled manner.”

Conclusion

Bionic Hair is more than just an alternative to existing products – it is a breakthrough solution that is revolutionizing everyday ceramic dental work.

With Bionic Hair, Renfert continues its tradition of innovation and offers dental laboratories a tool that is not only technically advanced, but also thoughtfully designed to meet the demands of modern dental technicians.
